Carpet steam cleaning is properly called hot water extraction. Despite the name, it does not use steam. Heated water and a cleaning solution are pushed into the carpet under pressure, which loosens the oils and dirt gripping each fibre. A powerful vacuum then pulls the water back out, taking the dirt with it. The cleaning happens in that second step. Most of the water goes back into the machine rather than staying in your carpet, which is why proper extraction dries in hours rather than days. It is the method most carpet manufacturers recommend for a deep clean, and it is the one we use on the majority of jobs. ## Who it suits Steam cleaning is the right choice for homes that have not been done in a year or more, rentals being handed back at the end of a lease, carpet with visible traffic lanes, and any job where pet accidents or spills have soaked past the surface. For lightly soiled carpet that just needs freshening between deep cleans, a bonnet clean is faster and cheaper. You do not need to be home. If you would rather, we measure the rooms on site, either by room count or by square metre, and give you the price before we start. Either way the number you are given is the number you pay, unless you ask for extra work on the day. ## Three recent jobs **Commercial carpet, Gungahlin.** Dark, ground-in traffic marking had built up along the doorway and the main walking path, next to a tiled food preparation area. Mark worked the heaviest edge and the traffic lane first, then cleaned the full floor with the truck-mounted unit, after hours so the business was not disrupted. The colour came back evenly right up to the tile edge. **Six-month-old pet stain, Queanbeyan.** A brown mark the size of a coaster on beige loop-pile carpet, pet urine that had been sitting more than six months. Treated directly before extraction, it came out with no ring, no shadow and no pale patch. That last part matters, because old urine slowly bleaches the dye out of the fibre, and once that happens no cleaning brings the colour back. This one was caught in time. **End of lease, Blacktown.** A house being handed back with dark traffic lanes through the hallway and main walking paths. We pre-treated the lanes, left them to work, then ran hot water extraction across the full floor. The lanes lifted and the carpet returned to an even colour, and we provided the receipt agents ask for as proof of a professional clean.
